Avengelyne Comics: A Healthy Dose of Heavenly Chaos
Let's face it … everyone loves a sexy super heroine. And when we drill down to the nuts and bolts, they just don't get any sexier than Avengelyne. Created by Rob Liefeld, in concert with Cathy Christian, and Tony Lobito, the character made her official debut in Avengelyne: Deadly Sins, which was published by Maximum Press in 1995.
Over the years, the comic book Over the years, the comic book series has been shuffled through the hands of multiple publishers, including Awesome Entertainment, Avatar Press, and Image Comics. Notably, in 2011, Image Comics launched a new ongoing Avengelyne series under the creative team of Mark Poulton and Owen Gieni.
So just who is Avengelyne? I'm glad you asked. Avengelyne is a fallen angel, who was once the most feared warrior in Heaven’s Warhost. She single-handedly breached the walls of Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. Some real boss shit. Unfortunately, she was banished from Heaven by the Big Guy after being tricked into questioning His love for humans, which is some real BS if you ask me. Any way, she was stripped of most of her abilities, yet retained her otherworldly strength and angelic blood, which can be used to forge a powerful sword, or a even miracle when empowered by quoting verses from the good book.
As a resident of earth, Avengelyne uses her powers to battle demons, supernatural villains, and a host of other bad guys. These grueling battles take her to some dark and dangerous places as she is essentially mankind's last hope as the inevitable Armageddon looms. Beyond the blood shed, the series often delves into themes of redemption, faith, and the nature of good and evil.
After reading through a couple issues, I couldn't help thinking how cool it would be to see this beautiful madness play out on the big screen. And it seems I'm not alone. Avengelyne has been in development for a live-action adaptation for several years. In 2013, co-creator Rob Liefeld and Gina Carano were said to be working on a film version, with Carano set to star as the titular character. Paramount Pictures acquired the film rights in 2016, and more recently, Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films announced their involvement in producing a feature film adaptation.
Warner Brothers Pictures is reportedly close to acquiring the project, with Olivia Wilde in the director's chair and Robbie herself set to play Avengelyne. Guess we'll all just have to keep our fingers crossed and see what happens.
Avengelyne continues to captivate readers with its blend of celestial battles, supernatural intrigue, and a strong-willed heroine. Bits of fan service here and there doesn't hurt either. Needless to say, we highly recommend putting this one on your to do list.
